AVIS Research in general Overview at its facilities

Materials science and engineering (MSE) is an interdisciplinary field that impacts almost every application area. Finding or developing a material with the right properties, or with affordable fabrication costs, or appropriately characterizing the material composition and/or structure to enable development of specific material properties, is often the limiting factor and enabling technology in most applications. AVIS faculty, affiliated faculty, and graduate students conduct in-depth research in materials science and engineering to address the requirements of several applications including energy, microelectronics, nanotechnology, life sciences, optics, aerospace, and bioengineering with the goals of enhancing scientific understanding and promoting industrial development and economic growth. With research expenditures totaling more than $3.6M per year, the UCF materials science and engineering research efforts are supported by a number of government agencies, including national laboratories, as well as private industries. The AVIS faculty and host local students supporting the research and publication at national and international conferences.

3D Printing Research & Experiences Lab

Explore new possibilities in the 3D Printing Research & Experiences Lab at almost all of the 3D printing is becoming a key technology in engineering, as industries are adapting it to produce lightweight, energy-efficient materials, manufacture parts for transportation and aerospace industries and develop advanced prosthetics and other biomedical solutions.

Student Opportunities
All AVIS students can elect to take Introduction to Rapid Prototyping. Learn fundamental rapid prototyping and related concepts, and design and produce models using the technology.

Opportunities to learn outside of the classroom are available through the AVIS 3D Printing Club, which develops product solutions from inception to implementation and works to solve problems.

Research Opportunities
Industries and governmental agencies are adopting 3D printing as an innovative way to manufacture lightweight, inexpensive parts. The technology is becoming commonplace in the automobile and aerospace industries, among energy producers and in the construction business.

Faculty members and researchers across campus are invited to submit proposals to collaborate on research projects involving new ways to apply 3D printing. This is a great way to secure new funding as agencies are interested in further exploring possible uses for these materials and products.
